UFO-11 (USA-174)

UFO-11 Background and technical overview.

HOME  > OPERATIONAL > MODES & FREQUENCIES > SATELLITES - RADIO TARGETS >

UFO-11 is the final spacecraft of the U.S. Navy's UHF Follow-On (UFO) programme. It is also designated USA-174, 2003-057A, and NORAD 28117. It was launched on 18 December 2003 by an Atlas IIIB from Cape Canaveral SLC-36B. The launch mass was approximately 3,041 kg.

CelesTrak currently lists UFO-11 at roughly 35,800 km altitude with an inclination of about 9°.

The inclination is significant: UFO-11 is not presently a perfectly geostationary satellite. It moves north and south relative to the equator over the course of a day.

The UFO system has been superseded by MUOS. UFO-11 was intended partly as a transition/gap-filler spacecraft between the UFO constellation and MUOS. Current U.S. Space Force information describes the UFO system as having been fully replaced by MUOS.
